An early Japanese Type 99 from the first series made at Nagoya Arsenal, dating from about 1941. It is chambered in 7.7x58mm with a 26-inch round barrel, and the bore is good with strong, well-defined rifling. The bolt does not match the receiver, but the bayonet lug does. The finish is thinning around the receiver, the markings stay sharp and the Imperial chrysanthemum is fully intact. It keeps its anti-aircraft rear sight wings and original monopod. The early two-piece stock shows the dual drain holes and has a light coat of linseed oil. A sling is included. Serial number 22786.
This is a military collectible rather than a hunting rifle, and the intact chrysanthemum, sight wings and monopod are the details Pennsylvania collectors of Pacific War arms look for on early Type 99s. The action is smooth and mechanically sound. As a bolt-action centerfire it would be legal in Pennsylvania's regular firearms deer season, but most owners will keep a rifle this complete out of the woods.
