Pennsylvania rifle season means cold mornings on wooded ridges and long walks up mountain hollows, and a heavy rifle feels heavier by noon. The Fierce Mini Rogue family is built for youth, women and smaller-framed hunters, making it a strong pick for a junior hunter's first whitetail or a hunter who wants a lighter rifle for the big woods.

These rifles have carbon fiber stocks with a shorter length of pull and an adjustable comb or push-button cheek piece. The stainless Fierce dual-lug action handles wet weather, and the CT Mini Rogue XP weighs about 6 lb. 6.5 Creedmoor and 7mm-08 Remington suit Pennsylvania whitetail, while 308 Winchester gives more for black bear.

Under the carbon stock sits Fierce's stainless steel dual-lug action with a 70-degree bolt throw and a spiral-fluted bolt. The trigger is a Bix'n Andy Dakota, adjustable, and the barrel is match grade and hand lapped.

6.5 PRC takes the 6.5 mm bullet faster than the Creedmoor for more reach on elk and mule deer, at the cost of a little more recoil. 6.5 PRC recoils more than the Creedmoors; for a first season most young hunters do better with 6.5 Creedmoor.

This rifle has a 20 in threaded barrel, 4+1 capacity, and weighs about 5.8 lb. Finish: Sonora Ambush Camo.

In cold weather a hunter wears more layers, and a long length of pull only gets longer. A shorter stock helps a young shooter keep the rifle in the shoulder pocket even in a heavy coat. Set the comb so the eye lands on the scope center without lifting the head. Start a junior hunter on 6.5 Creedmoor or a 25 before moving to 308 for bear.
