Serial number 70 is a New Haven Arms Company Volcanic lever-action carbine made around 1857 to 1860, chambered for the .41 Rocket Ball and fitted with a 21-inch barrel, a length seen less often than the usual ones. The barrel has been refinished, the frame rates very good, and the stock is a well-made replacement copy. The bore is dark with pitting but the rifling is still strong and visible.
This is a cabinet piece, not a field gun. The Volcanic was a step on the road to the Winchester rifle, and a low two-digit serial with the scarcer 21-inch barrel is the sort of carbine Pennsylvania collectors of early lever actions look for. Weigh the refinished barrel and the replacement stock against the frame condition and the serial when you judge it; both are disclosed and reflected in how the piece is presented.
