A late-war Japanese Type 99 from the eighth series at Nagoya Arsenal, made between late 1944 and early 1945 and often called a Last Ditch rifle. It is chambered in 7.7x58mm with a 25.5-inch round barrel. The bore is very good with light frosting in the grooves and strong, well-defined rifling. The bolt matches the receiver, and the safety knob and firing pin are both numbered 702. The three-piece stock is very good with light handling marks. The Imperial chrysanthemum on the receiver is fully intact and the original sling comes with it. Serial number 72514.
Late-war Type 99s were made under pressure, so one with a matching bolt, an intact chrysanthemum, the original sling and a sound action is a strong example for a Pennsylvania collector of wartime Japanese arms. The action is smooth and functions correctly. It is a manually operated centerfire rifle, but its value is in the cabinet, not in the deer woods.
