Eagle Head Officer’s Sword

An eagle head officer's sword dating to roughly 1820 to 1830, with a 30-inch blade finished in blue and gilt. The hilt is cast brass with an eagle head pommel and an ivory grip, and the sword keeps its original black leather scabbard with brass mounts. The only flaw called out is some staining on the blade near the tip; otherwise it is described as a very fine original example.

Swords of this period are bought for the hilt and the blade decoration, and this one has both: the eagle head, the ivory grip and the surviving blue and gilt on the blade. For a Pennsylvania collector of early 19th-century militaria it is an original set, scabbard included, rather than a married piece. Keep it out of damp storage so the blade staining does not spread, and handle the ivory grip with care.
