A long Japanese sukashi arrowhead, pierced through with a dragon's tongue aperture and signed on the tang by Naga Tsugu. The edge carries a suguha, or straight, temper line with visible activity in the steel. The head measures 5 1/2 inches, and the piece runs 13 1/2 inches, or 34.9 cm, overall including the tang.

An openwork arrowhead like this is a display piece, and it is for the Pennsylvania collector of Japanese edged work, sword fittings and arms rather than for any archer. The signature on the tang, the pierced design and the visible temper are the three things to study in the photos. It displays well on a stand or in a frame alongside tsuba and other fittings, and the long tang gives it presence out of proportion to the size of the head.
