An Ames militia officer's presentation sword made in 1856 and given to Captain L. Lambert of the Troy City Rifle Company. The blade is 31 inches and the sword measures 38 inches overall. The grip is hexagonal, made of silver and engraved, topped by an eagle head pommel. The scabbard is gold washed with relief-worked furniture; the front is marked Captain L. Lambert and the back carries the presentation inscription from the Troy City Rifle Company dated Jan. 7, 1856.
The blade shows minor staining, but the acid etching is complete and present, which is the main condition point on a presentation Ames. For a Pennsylvania collector of pre-Civil War militia swords this is a named and dated piece with its presentation scabbard, the combination that separates a documented sword from an anonymous one. Research the Troy City Rifle Company and Captain Lambert yourself; the inscription gives you the names and the date to start from.
