Eagle Head Officer Saber

An eagle head officer's saber made in 1830 with a 30-inch blade finished in blue and gilt. The hilt and the scabbard are gilded too, and the grip is bone beneath a very fine eagle head pommel. Two condition issues are disclosed: the grip has a small chip on the inside of the guard, and the grip is loose.

Eagle head sabers of this date are collected for the pommel and the blade decoration, and this one keeps its gilding on blade, hilt and scabbard together. The loose grip and the chip are honest wear on a sword nearly two centuries old, and a Pennsylvania collector should decide up front whether to have the grip stabilized or leave it as found. Either way the blue and gilt blade is the feature to look at first in the photos, followed by the eagle head itself.
