An original World War II German Army cold-weather face mask, the Tarnmaske, reversible and printed in the Splittermuster splinter-pattern camouflage. It was cut from Zeltbahn shelter-quarter material and fitted with three cotton twill face ties and ten grommets over the mouth for breathing. Often called a sniper mask, it was issued more broadly than that name suggests.
This is a piece for the Pennsylvania collector of German WWII headgear and camouflage, and it is the kind of small textile item that completes a mannequin or a framed display of splinter-pattern gear. Check the ties, the grommets and the two faces of the reversible material in the photos, since those are where these masks show wear. Store it flat and dry, away from sunlight, to protect the printed pattern and the cotton ties.
